As many as seven students from Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Ashok Nagar got MBBS seats under 7.5% special reservation for government school students this year. Last year, five students secured the MBBS seats and one got a BDS seat.
These students hailing from lower-middle class families could not afford coaching for NEET. A combination of self-study, online coaching, teachers help and mentorship program from MBBS students helped them succeed.
Praveena G, who scored 353 in NEET and got a MBBS seat in Omandurar Government Medical College said, “Our Headmistress arranged for mentorship program and 2 MBBS students from Kilpauk Medical College mentored me”. Her father Gunasekaran runs milk booth in Kodambakkam.
Rijuvana Yasin J, who secured 279 in NEET has got seat in Government Medical College in Tirunelveli.
One student didn’t accept the BDS seat since she wanted to join MBBS. Out of 7 students from the same school, four were from the current batch and three were old students.
